For the first time in its history, Bosnia and Herzegovina has its own representative at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). A place in contemporary science in the field of physics and engineering, through a two-year contract, has been opened to Admir Greljo, a young man from Trebinje.
Two Candidates
Now a theoretical physicist at CERN, where a few years ago the historic discovery of a new subatomic particle, the Higgs boson, better known as the God particle, took place, Greljo tells “Avaz” that he will have the opportunity to propose and extend new theories that could answer some of the hardest questions of modern physics, such as the history of the early universe, the nature of dark matter, the structure of space-time...
Dr Greljo: Enjoying His Chosen Profession
For some time now he has been engaged in theoretical research into the laws of nature at the shortest distances, at the level of elementary subatomic particles, which are studied experimentally at the world's largest scientific laboratory, CERN. After his doctoral studies in Ljubljana and postdoctoral positions in Zurich and Mainz, he applied for the prestigious research position at CERN, which is awarded each year to two candidates from non-member states of CERN.
- The competition among several hundred applicants was truly exceptional; the call includes countries such as the United States of America, Russia, China and India, so I am very happy about this selection - Greljo told “Avaz”.
An Important Step
This young scientist and holder of a doctorate adds that now, as a member of CERN, his goal is to push the boundaries of knowledge and to search for new physics.
- CERN is a very important step in my career. It is the centre of everything happening in this field. Experience at CERN opens many doors across the scientific world – Greljo adds.
He says that the road to success was not easy and that his parents felt this most during his education, and today his wife does too.
It Is Possible!
When he enrolled in the first year of the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science in Sarajevo 10 years ago, Admir never dreamt of a contract with CERN.
- So, it is possible! – is Greljo's message to all young people in BiH. He has also received many other awards and honours, and in 2011 he was presented with the special "UNSA Golden Badge" award.
