Young BiH Researchers Achieve Success After Success Abroad and Want to Advance the BiH Research Scene

Young BiH researchers who are achieving success after success in Europe and at the most prestigious European and global institutions have founded the Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (ANNT), which aims to promote science and technology and to strengthen the competitiveness of the research scene in BiH.

Admir Greljo, Adnan Mehonić, Dženan Lapandić, Suad Krilašević, Selver Pepić and Nudžeim Selimović were the best students of the University of Sarajevo in their generations and are recipients of the UNSA Golden Badge, as well as prestigious international awards.

"The Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology is an initiative of young people who completed at least their first cycle of studies at UNSA. We know what is good and what is bad at this university, and since we are pursuing master's and doctoral studies in Europe and around the world, we know what quality control of academic work means. We must be able to generate ideas and be open towards other universities so that we have an efficient flow of ideas and can define a vision," said Adnan Mehonić, who has been a member of the academic staff of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University College London since last year.

The Potential of the BiH Research Scene

These young people are the best ambassadors of BiH society in the world, and the fact that they are achieving success at the most prestigious European and global universities and institutions (CERN, MIT, University College London, ETH Zurich, Trinity College Dublin, etc.) speaks to the potential of the BiH research scene and the quality of first-cycle studies at the University of Sarajevo. Investing in education is always a good investment, but the best students of the University of Sarajevo stress that before investing it is important to have a good vision.

"As students we managed to succeed, but that is only the beginning, because an academic career really starts with the completion of doctoral studies. We must be aware of the metrics that show someone is a good and successful academic or researcher, because before investing in something one should be well informed and know what or whom to invest in," said Mehonić.

Having a Vision Is Essential

Admir Greljo, a theoretical physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), who this year signed a two-year contract in a position awarded to two candidates from non-member states of CERN, emphasises that BiH has exceptional human resources.

"We have better people than other European countries, but state investment lags behind EU countries, and that is the fundamental problem. However, the motivation of academics, personal ambition and recognising what excellence actually means are also very important. We can overcome a great deal if we have a good vision and if we recognise what it is we are striving for," say UNSA's best students.

Six outstanding young scientists from BiH presented their idea to UNSA Rector Rifat Škrijelj.

"This group of young people is just a number of those whom the University of Sarajevo, in its faculties and laboratories, has prepared for what they are today. They achieve the best results and are the best prospect for this country, provided, of course, that they are properly recognised and actively involved in the technological development of BiH and the strengthening of its institutions," said Škrijelj.
